Zandile Mchive shares her experience in Northline’s Graduate Program

We recently spoke with one of our current Graduate Program participants Zandile about her experience so far at Northline. Drawn to the opportunity to gain hands-on experience across multiple departments she joined the Program to build her knowledge of the Transport and Logistics industry while developing her professional skills. From becoming forklift certified to discovering a passion for operations and preparing for her upcoming finance rotation, Zandile shared what has made her journey so rewarding and what she hopes to achieve as she continues to grow her career with Northline.

Why did you apply for Northline’s Graduate Program?

I applied for Northline’s Graduate Program because I wanted the opportunity to gain hands-on experience across different areas of the business while developing a strong understanding of the Transport and Logistics industry. What stood out to me was the exposure to multiple departments and the chance to learn directly from experienced employees. As a recent graduate, I was looking for a Program that would give me a chance to assess my strengths and weaknesses whilst also allowing me to grow professionally and provide meaningful opportunities to contribute from day one.

What attracted you to the Transport and Logistics industry?

Before joining Northline, I never fully appreciated how much coordination, planning and teamwork goes into moving freight safely and efficiently across the country. Since starting the Program, I’ve enjoyed seeing how different teams work together to solve problems and keep operations running smoothly. As a woman entering an industry that has traditionally been male-dominated, I have also been inspired by the opportunity to challenge myself, learn new skills and contribute to a field that continues to evolve.

What do you hope to achieve during your time on the program?

During my time on the Program, I hope to continue building my knowledge of Northline’s operations and gain a well-rounded understanding of the Transport and Logistics industry. I want to develop both my operational and leadership capabilities, learn from the experienced people around me and identify where I can add the most value in the future. Most importantly, I want to leave the Graduate Program with the confidence, skills and relationships needed to build a successful long-term career with Northline.

What departments are you most looking forward to working in?

So far, I have particularly enjoyed my time in Operations and looking forward to starting my finance rotation considering my background in commerce. The Operations department has given me a greater appreciation for the planning, coordination and teamwork required to keep freight moving safely and efficiently. At the same time, my interest in working with people has made me curious about the commercial side of the business, particularly how strong customer relationships are built and maintained. I’m looking forward to continuing to explore different departments throughout the Program and gaining a broader understanding of how each area contributes to Northline’s success.

What has been your favourite moment at Northline so far?

My favourite moment so far has been seeing the level of support and teamwork across the business. One experience that stands out was learning to operate a forklift and becoming forklift certified. It pushed me outside of my comfort zone, but the encouragement and patience shown by my colleagues helped me build confidence and develop new skills. More broadly, I’ve enjoyed working alongside people from different departments who are always willing to share their knowledge and help others succeed. These experiences have made me feel welcomed, supported and genuinely part of the Northline team.
