Introducing Jorg Both, Northline’s new Head of Business Systems

Northline is pleased to announce that Jorg Both has joined the business as Head of Business Systems.

Jorg brings over three decades of experience to the company and has been in the transport and logistics industry for as long as he can remember.

Throughout his career, Jorg has pioneered engine management systems, introduced cutting-edge technologies and spearheaded transformative changes in each of the roles he has undertaken, helping to promote significant growth and refine processes along the way.

Jorg talks about his passion for the industry and shares more about his career to date as well as his plans for the future of his team:

“Throughout my career, I’ve been entrenched in the world of transport and logistics, drawn in by the multifaceted nature of the job. Whether it’s managing local freight or orchestrating international shipments via rail, there’s a thrill in navigating this industry. It’s a domain I comprehend deeply and derive immense satisfaction from. With its myriad moving components, each day presents fresh learning opportunities and challenges. In striving for operational excellence, we’re constantly innovating and refining strategies to enhance the efficiency of our operations. Admittedly, it’s not a realm for the faint-hearted, demanding dedication and resilience, yet the rewards are commensurate with the effort invested.”

How many years of experience do you have in Business Systems/IT?

Over three decades ago, my journey began in the world of photocopiers. One pivotal day, the company diversified into computer sales, marking the start of my fascinating career in IT. Along the way, I’ve been privileged to engage with a multitude of cutting-edge technologies, each adding depth and excitement to my professional journey.

What industries and roles have you worked in before?

I began my journey working with a photocopying company before transitioning to a tech company that was focused on the trucking industry. There, I was involved in pioneering engine management systems in South Africa. Later, I ventured into food services, introducing cutting-edge technologies to food courts inside of leading car manufacturers’ manufacturing plants. This propelled me to immigrate to Australia, where I worked for a courier company that was initially operating on outdated paper-based systems. Over four years, I spearheaded transformative changes, leveraging technology to accommodate significant growth, particularly in the E-commerce sector.

Eventually, I sought new challenges and joined a rail company traversing remote Australia where I was able to witness the intricacies of rail operations and eventually settled in Adelaide, seeking a balanced lifestyle.

It was then that I stumbled upon an opportunity at Northline, where the job description resonated with my expertise and aspirations. After expressing my enthusiasm for the role, I knew that Northline was the next step in my career journey.

What plans do you have for your department?

I’m thrilled to lead such a diverse team, filled with individuals passionate about their work and eager to learn. As we gear up for several key projects outlined by the Executive Leadership Team, I recognise the impending increase in demands. It’s essential to ensure that our department possesses the right skill sets to not only tackle these projects but also mentor other team members.

Recently, we welcomed Mary Batungbakal to the Integration team and Elizar Estrera Jr to the Business Applications teams, both bringing a wealth of experience in transport and IT management from companies where technological demands evolve alongside business needs.

Personally, I find immense value in traversing our business, immersing myself in the daily challenges our staff face. By doing so, I can actively seek ways to streamline operations and minimise unnecessary tasks.

I strongly advocate for team members to engage directly with employees across the organisation, understanding their daily frustrations firsthand. This empathy-driven approach enables us to address these challenges collaboratively, empowering our colleagues to refocus on their core objectives within Northline.

What has been your favourite aspect since joining the business?

After just one month at Northline, I’ve found the team to be welcoming and receptive. I’m fortunate to have a supportive manager who recognises the potential of our department and the value we can bring to the company. Furthermore, I’ve gained a deeper appreciation for the significant presence and impact Northline has in the market, which further fuels my drive to innovate and implement cutting-edge technologies wherever possible.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I’m a member of HOGS (Harley Davidson Owners’ Groups), where I join a convoy of around 70 bikes every other weekend to tour South Australia and the Northern Territory. These rides offer a wonderful chance to venture out on weekends and discover the numerous hidden treasures scattered across these regions. Additionally, I find great pleasure in freshwater fly fishing, indulging in this hobby whenever I can. On weekends, you’ll often find me tinkering away on various projects at home…just as long as I don’t bug my wife I’m safe.
