Read moreWe sat down with Alastair Bassett to learn more about his career journey, experience across various industries, and his current role within Northline’s International Freight Management team.
My journey with Northline began in 2017, when I joined for the first time and worked until 2018. I then rejoined the business in 2022. So collectively, I’ve been with the business for around five years.
My background is quite diverse. After completing my university degree in Property and Real Estate, I worked across multiple sectors including property, real estate, film and television, and esports. Although these industries varied greatly, all my roles were sales-focused.
I have always had a passion for sales and relationship-building, and I found that these strengths aligned well with the logistics industry. So, when the opportunity to rejoin Northline arose, it felt like a natural progression. The challenge of entering the international freight space with limited knowledge was also a motivating factor. It’s been a steep learning curve, but one I’ve embraced.
As a BDE, my core responsibility is to develop long-term relationships with customers across a broad range of industries. While the primary focus is to onboard new business, the role is hybrid and involves ongoing account management. Typically, I divide my week between customer visits and office-based work, including administration and quoting.
The support and collaboration within the International Freight Management team stand out the most. Transitioning from a domestic freight background to international logistics presented a significant challenge, but the mentorship I have received has made such an impact. It has really helped to build my knowledge and confidence in the role.
I have been fortunate to have multiple mentors. Both Charlie Storer, Operations Manager and Rob Baigent, General Manager, have provided guidance in different areas of the business. Joe Rizk, Business Development Manager, has also offered valuable support, particularly during transitions in the Victoria leadership team. Diane Cox took me under her wing while I transitioned from an internal role to my role now, showing me the ins and outs and even took me out on the road to introduce me to customers. Their mentorship has equipped me with the skills to eventually take on greater responsibility.
One of Northline’s greatest strengths is our national transport network, supported by over 42 years of industry experience. This reputation enhances our credibility. That said, a recurring challenge is market awareness. Some customers are still unaware that we offer international freight services, which highlights the importance of education and proactive engagement.
Our ability to deliver an end-to-end logistics solution, from domestic transport through to international import and export, is a key differentiator. Customers benefit from having a single provider, which streamlines processes, reduces administrative overhead and simplifies their supply chain. It’s a compelling value proposition in a market.
